SACRED HARP SINGINGS IN THE CHICAGO AREA

New to Sacred Harp?

If you're new to Sacred Harp singing, or if you want to learn more about it than is contained on this site, we suggest you start by following this link to http://fasola.org, where you can read all about it.  Then plan to attend a singing and join in - these are not concerts or performances, but community events where all who attend are welcome and encouraged to sing (of course, listeners are most welcome too... but you'll have more fun if you sing!).  No previous musical experience is required.  Sacred Harp events are free and open to the public.

Click here or scroll down near the bottom of this page for a link to some excellent advice on preparing and carrying food for dinner on the grounds at a large Sacred Harp singing (and why you shouldn't need to worry about refrigeration or reheating facilities).

Sacred Harp CDs from Squirrel Hill Recordings

CD CoverLookout Mountain Convention 1968 is the first CD from Squirrel Hill Recordings.  A selection of more than 30 songs from the 1960 edition of the Original Sacred Harp (plus one song from the Cooper Book) and spoken portions recorded by James "Bud" Oliver at the Lookout Mountain Convention in August 1968 at New Bethel Church on Lookout Mountain, Alabama, this recording captures the drive, energy, passion and character of a style of Sacred Harp singing that is disappearing and is treasured by many.  Leaders and singers include many beloved folks who are no longer among us, as well as many who are.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each CD goes to support the Lookout Mountain Sacred Harp Convention (see above).  The CD has attracted many rave reviews from Sacred Harp singers who have purchased it.  If you have any questions about this CD, please e-mail us at squirrelhill-AT-pipeline.com

 Iveys' 72 CD cover
New Year's Eve at the Iveys' 1972
is the second CD from Squirrel Hill Recordings!  Its 26 tracks are compiled from a recording made on a portable tape recorder by Marie Ivey at a singing held at the home of Marie and her husband Coy in Henagar on Sand Mountain in Alabama on New Year's Eve in 1972, consisting of songs from the 1971 edition of the Sacred Harp (all of which are in the 1991 edition as well), sung by a group that includes some legendary singers that are sadly no longer with us, such as Eulas and Helen Ivey, Andrew Ivey, and Bonard Wilks.  The New Year's Eve singing, which was begun in 1962 by Eloise Ivey Wootten and Brenda Wootten Carroll, has since outgrown private homes and is now held every year at Antioch Baptist Church in Ider, AL.

To hear samples of the tracks from this CD, click here.  While the quality of the recording is not that of a professional studio product, the singing is strong, moving and well worth the occasional noise (including a ringing phone!) that may crop up...

$3 from the sale of each copy of New Year's Eve at the Iveys' 1972 will be donated to the Sacred Harp Musical Heritage Association, which you can read about at http://fasola.org/shmha/
